"I was a graduate of the Local 633 Cement Masons concrete finishing class spring of 2023. Well, I just wanted to give you an update. I’m now working for Adolfson & Peterson Construction. I’m a Union Apprentice Laborer and I love it. I’m so thankful to you and the program. I have a wonderful career with an amazing company."

That's the message Tonia shared earlier this month when she reached out to Sylvia Garcia, MnDOT-DEED Pre-Apprentice Highway Construction Training Program Coordinator.

Tonia shared how her life has changed since starting on her path to a construction career through MnDOT DEED pre-apprentice training.

"My life before 2023 was very different. I always struggled to pay my bills and my finances were always challenging," said Tonia who worked at a low wage job for as many as 60 hours a week to try to make ends meet. "After I was accepted to the program, I learned new skills and started a new career that I love. Wished I’d did it years ago! Having a wonderful career with a great company has made my life so much better. For the first time in years I am financially independent and I so many wonderful things have happened in my life. I love going to work everyday and am so grateful!!!"

This year, MnDOT and DEED are offering a 240-hour, 6-week cement mason training course includes a combination of curriculum-based classroom instruction, hands-on use of tools and equipment, videos and engagement with industry experts. This training is offered at NO COST to qualified applicants. The training dates are April 14 through May 23, 2025.
