Minnesota author and playwright Kevin Kling became a writer because of his left arm. Growing up with a left arm about three-quarters the size of his right arm with no wrist or thumb, people would call his arm lots of different names. Soon words became very important to him.
Words help tell his story and define his character. He realizes that challenges and frustrations come with having a disability. But he also takes pride in the lessons, the strength and the perspective his disability has provided him. He likes to teach people that what makes you different gives you strength. When you project that strength, people will see your true self.
There’s a saying from Zimbabwe that he likes to use that says, “Until the lion tells the story, the hunter will always be the hero.” In other words, if you don’t tell your story, others will tell your story for you.
