Computer Systems Analysts are one of the highest in-demand occupations in the state, with hiring activity picking up in recent months. Demand for this occupation was also shown in recent Job Vacancy Survey data, where there were 618 job openings for Computer Systems Analysts in the state. Most people who are looking to obtain employment as a Computer Systems Analyst will need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, but may also benefit from industry-recognized credentials or certifications, such as Microsoft Access, C++ and/or Python. According to DEED’s Educational Requirements for Occupations data, 76% of the Computer Systems Analyst job openings in the state require a bachelor’s degree.
There are many tasks that a Computer Systems Analyst performs on the job, including testing, maintaining and monitoring computer programs and systems, troubleshooting program and system malfunctions, expanding and modifying systems to improve work flow, and training staff and other users to work with computer systems and programs. Computer Systems Analysts also benefit from having skills in critical thinking, systems analysis and evaluation, complex problem solving, mathematics, and time management. This occupation also requires an element of social skills, given that Computer Systems Analysts consult with management and meet with clients regarding the work that needs to be completed.
With the high degree of education and skills required to gain employment as a Computer Systems Analyst, it is not surprising that the wages for this occupation are relatively high. Half of those employed as Computer Systems Analysts earn wages between $35.56 and $56.33 per hour, while the median hourly wage rests at $45.03 (or $93,662 annually). As skills and experience increase, those employed as Computer Systems Analysts can be promoted to Computer and Information Systems Managers, which, with a median wage of $69.10, is one of the highest paying occupations in the state.
