The manufacturing sector plays a crucial role in central Minnesota’s economy, providing numerous job opportunities for individuals seeking rewarding careers. Recognizing the importance of cultivating a skilled workforce and inspiring interest in manufacturing careers among young people, Leading CareerForce partner Central Minnesota Jobs & Training Services, Inc. (CMJTS) has been at the forefront of organizing Operation Exploration, a hands-on career exploration camp.
Operation Exploration is designed to enlighten participants about the wide array of opportunities available in the manufacturing industry. By engaging manufacturers in the initiative, the program aims to educate, inspire, and equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue successful careers in manufacturing.
One shining example of the impact of Operation Exploration is Carson, an 18-year-old participant whose journey exemplifies the program’s effectiveness. Carson’s involvement with CMJTS began at the age of 16 when he attended the Trades Camp at the Wright Technical Center. Over the years, he has demonstrated exceptional dedication and passion for the field of welding. With support from CMJTS, Carson was able to further his skills by participating in the Welding Class at Wright Technical Center and subsequently obtaining acceptance into the advanced Welding 2 class.
Not only did CMJTS assist by purchasing his welding helmet, but they also facilitated a valuable work experience opportunity for Carson at Cedar Lake Metal Solutions in Maple Lake. This experience proved invaluable, as Carson successfully passed his AWS qualification in April 2024, marking a significant milestone in his welding journey. Currently, Carson is actively pursuing a career as a welder, with his sights set on securing a position at Caterpillar in Brooklyn Park. His determination and hard work illustrate the positive impact of Operation Exploration in shaping the future workforce of the manufacturing industry.
Manufacturers actively engage in Operation Exploration by contributing to curriculum development, participating in program activities, and providing participants with crucial opportunities such as tours, job shadowing, and work experience. Through their involvement, they not only foster a pipeline of skilled workers but also gain the opportunity to connect with future talent in the industry. The success story of Carson and numerous other participants underscores the significance of programs like Operation Exploration in igniting passion, nurturing talent and bridging the gap between education and industry. As the manufacturing sector continues to evolve, initiatives like Operation Exploration will be instrumental in preparing the next generation of skilled professionals and ensuring the sustained growth of the industry in central Minnesota.
