Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs (English Language, diploma, and career pathway classes)
Some basic skills are required to find or keep a job.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) services are available throughout Minnesota and can help you:
- Work toward a high school diploma, adult diploma, or high school equivalency diploma (based on the General Educational Development (GED) Test or High School Equivalency Test (HiSET)
- Improve your English language skills with classes for English language learners, sometimes these classes are called English as a Second Language classes
- Learn U.S. government, civics, rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and English for the naturalization process and exam
- Increase your basic skills like reading, math and computer skills to help you achieve your education, career, and life goals
- Provide access to career pathway classes
Services focused on preparing for your career or a post-secondary educational program are free for eligible participants.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for ABE, an individual must be age 17 or older and not enrolled in or required to be enrolled in any school in the K-12 system,
And must meet one or both of the following criteria:
- Lack a secondary (high school) credential
- Function below the 12th grade level in any of the basic academic areas including reading, math, and ability to read, write and understand English
