Medical and health services managers play a vital role in hospitals, clinics, managed care facilities, public health agencies and other health care organizations, providing direction and coordination of services. There are over 8,330 people employed as medical and health services managers, with the highest number (61% or 5,110 workers) working in the 7-county Twin Cities metro region. As healthcare continues to expand in Minnesota, demand for medical and health services managers is expected to swell by almost 1,150 new jobs through 2028, an increase of 17%, according to DEED’s Employment Outlook, with an additional 2,300 openings left vacant by current workers who exit the labor market.

There are a wide variety of job duties that a medical and health services manager performs, including: supervising and evaluating work activities of employees, developing and implementing organizational policies and procedures, working with financial operations, training and coordination of staff, and establishing work schedules. The list of skills and abilities that would benefit a good leader is large, but some that are pertinent include strong communication skills, such as written and oral expression and active listening, critical thinking, coordination, time management and more.

Because of the stresses and importance of the job, medical and health services managers have one of the higher paying occupations in the state, with half of those employed in this occupation earning between $38.88 and $62.59 per hour. Wages for these positions are high across the board, but do vary in different regions of the state, with the lowest median wages posted in Southwest and the highest in the Twin Cities and Southeast.

In addition to being included periodically in the top 30 Jobs in Demand listing, there are other sources of data from DEED that show just how in demand Medical and Health Services Managers are in the state. First, there is DEED’s Occupations in Demand data. Second, there is DEED’s Job Vacancy Survey, which shows that in the 4th quarter of 2019, there were 594 job openings for medical and health services managers, making up about 10% of the total vacancies for management occupations in the state. Because of the range of responsibility, very few (8%) of these job openings were part-time. Almost all (99%) of them required post-secondary education while two-thirds of them require one or more years of experience.
