Adults can earn up to four college credits by taking this class through Adult Basic Education.
Enrollment is open statewide!
Students can now earn college credits in healthcare while working towards their high school diploma or GED! Even if they have their high school equivalency, they can enroll in this course if they are less than college-ready.
The course will require approximately 90 hours to complete. It is available online, completely asynchronous, so students can complete the work any time. Our instructors provide instruction and support in using the online learning tools.
The Health Care Core course was developed by HealthForce MN and is a foundational, competency based Healthcare Curriculum that is a prerequisite for most healthcare careers. The HCCC includes basic knowledge that healthcare workers need to know to be able to contribute to the delivery of safe and effective healthcare. There are seven modules in this course including Health Career Exploration in the Behaviors for Success Module.
Students are required to enroll in their local Adult Basic Education program and have at least a 6th grade reading level in order to access the Health Care Core class. The local ABE program will coordinate with Sauk Rapids-Rice Hillside Adult Education to access the class.
This is a great opportunity for adult learners age 17+ who are not currently enrolled in a K-12 program.
Students will be expected to:
- use email, the online learning platform (Schoology), Google Docs or Word, and Zoom.
- use a computer (laptop or desktop) to complete their work (not only a tablet or phone).
- access technology including the internet and a computer (perhaps through an ABE site).
- complete the approximately 90 hour course from Jan - May 13, 2022. Fall 2022 dates TBD.
- work independently to complete about six hours of DL homework per week including:
- Lessons with embedded quizzes (~ 2 hours to complete).
- Assignments and unit quizzes (~2 hours).
- Recorded videos and instructor support (~2 hours).
- write essay-length documents with citations (~500 words/two pages, with instructions on writing citations)
- submit assignments by uploading or linking completed assignments to Schoology, the online learning platform.
- read high school and college-level informational text.
- access support from their HCCC instructors and local instructors.
- meet with an HCCC instructor on Zoom for an initial conference and a mid-term conference.
Students will be awarded college credits for Health Care Core curriculum. The course also completes the classroom portion of Certified Nursing Assistant at most campuses.
This program is free to adult basic education students.
