Why you should consider pulling together a portfolio

A portfolio is a set of documents, photos, graphics or other examples of a person’s work. Just like a resume, a portfolio can take many forms. Sharing a portfolio with a prospective employer can be a way to set yourself apart from other candidates for a position, who may not take the time to pull together additional documentation  showcasing their past work. All portfolios, especially online versions, such as a featured section of your LinkedIn profile, offer you various possibilities to visually showcase your skills and accomplishments.

What to include in your portfolio

Ensure that you are only including work in your portfolio that you played a significant role in creating and abide by any confidentiality, privacy or other requirements if you are including content you created while working for another employer. Potential portfolio content includes:

  • Project outlines and work samples
  • Articles written
  • Photos, videos or other documentation of presentations or other public speaking
  • Diplomas, certifications, transcripts and special licenses
  • Proof of workshops and conferences attended
  • References, evaluations, letters of recommendations and testimonials
  • Information about awards earned and honors received
